Chapter Thirteen

My energy waned long before I’d successfully unwound and removed the black tendrils tangled around the werewolf’s heart. The creature’s entire aura practically dripped with black sludge. This one was definitely harder than the first. And two back to back was proving much more difficult than I’d expected.

I wished I’d thought to bring the Epidote stone. I knew full-well I could heal without it now, but the beautiful feeling it always offered—the hint of someplace “other” it always seemed to whisper about—would be a welcome distraction right now. Hina, buried deep inside me, offered the same—but I didn’t want it from her. I was too afraid she’d be too difficult to stuff back inside. Just like when I’d healed Alex. Too much magic leaking out was becoming harder and harder to rein in again when it was over.

My shoulders and neck ached. Even inside the vortex of magic that cyclone around me and left me almost detached from my own body—even here I knew my physical self was fading.

And it was only my second wolf healing of the day.

RJ said it was going to take a few days for the magnetic draw they felt toward me to kick in. We’d only been here hours, though, and it was apparently already working its magic. These two hadn’t arrived together, but they’d both been pretty sick. Which translated to pretty intent on killing me. We were lucky we’d been able to put them down and bring them here. This way, they couldn’t run back and warn Indra.

Breck and Mason had stopped them using the tranquilizer darts RJ had supplied them with earlier. As soon as the wolves were brought inside, RJ started cursing about Alex being a truck thief. I hadn’t gotten the details before they’d sent me in to this spare room to do my thing on the sick werewolves, but apparently Alex had gone for groceries—and stolen his truck to do it.

Maybe it was lack of sleep or maybe it was my nerves being on edge with everything we were running from, but I couldn’t seem to concentrate. The first healing had gone relatively smooth but this one was dragging. Or maybe it was me.

I was dragging.

The awareness inside me—the piece that wasn’t really me—seemed to finally wake up and notice I was struggling. Like before, it sort of barged in and took over, picking up the slack and adding to my energy stores when they felt all but empty.

And suddenly, I didn’t have a choice any longer. Hina was here and she was taking over. White light poured in around me and suctioned into and then right back out of the infected wolf. I gasped at the overwhelming and cloying weight of the darkness I removed from him and gagged on the disgusting feeling that washed over me as it took up residence inside my head and heart. For the moment, I was helpless against both Hina and the disgusting darkness she was ripping out of the wolf.

My stomach rolled.
